HD TV and Blu-Ray are Great
For the past couple of years I have been happily enjoying life in HD. The fact that my TV gets somewhere near 200 channels really doesn’t matter. Nope, the package I have contains close to 15 HD channels, although they do sometimes contain standard definition shows (damn them). So I watch about 15 channels, that’s it except in the very rare case I get desperate when all that is available in HD are Law and Order re-runs I have seen five times.
So the majority of the channels don’t get any TV time… But you can’t get any HD package without adding it to a regular package. You also have to but they movie packages in order to get the one channel of six that they feel like broadcasting in HD. But enough ranting about costs, because it’s better to have nice things to say.
High Definition is pretty. Really pretty. So much so that while living in Japan I only turned the TV in my apartment on twice in four months. Once to get information about the NOVA English Teacher that was murdered, and once for information about a large earthquake that hit the northern island. Besides that I just didn’t watch. It was 15 inches and was distinctly old low-tech. So I decided not to suffer and got my news and entertainment from my laptop.
The other nice thing about having a huge TV is that you can get a PS3 to play Blu-Ray movies on. They also rank in the pretty category of things. And a PS3 is still several hundred dollars cheaper than an actual Blu-Ray movie player alone.
Oh yeah, I also do play games. They also look great, but very few PS3 games have really differentiated themselves from the PS2 games. Developers just haven’t really scaled up their graphics and performance yet. So I do play some, but I haven’t been overly thrilled by the graphics of any games yet… Except maybe Need For Speed: Carbon the reflections and lighting looks great in that. And graphics are, for the most part, better than what was on the PS2, they just haven’t gone leaps and bounds yet.
I’d continue on about more fun TV and gaming topics, but I think something impressive may be on Discovery HD. I’d hate to miss seeing some new insect in new ways that scare me.
