Meandering Thoughts
Trains are a great place to think. You get on for the commute and you’re left with time to space into the various ethereal realms of pointless thought.
I sometimes read on my commute, sometimes click on the old Ipod, but most times I just let my thoughts do what they will. I’ve found this to be overall more productive than most other things I could do on the train. I just let whatever thoughts hit my mind to mix and meander. The freedom of just letting things go that you really are not allowed at work or in most social situations is liberating.
In many ways the existential reduction of experience becomes more pure by doing this. The elimination of expectation is probably key to this. Your time on the train doesn’t have to be focused on anything. Whereas in most cases the point of thought is to create some end product (even the generation of witty banter at the bar), train time can be a total wipe of all responsibility.
I feel sad for the people who take work with them on the train. They really miss a perfect opportunity to generate a positive and peaceful state at any point in their routine.
That’s my deep thought for the day.
Of maybe I’m crazy…
