Expensive Brick

Computers are fun and amazing devices. Unfortunately, instead of owning a spiffy computer, I own a really expensive brick.

After I got back from a very nice Thanksgiving with friends (which I will write about very soon) I discovered that my desktop had developed a problem. It didn’t turn on.

The power button did a total of nothing. However, the happy little green LED on the motherboard was happy and green. that should normally mean things are somewhere close to working, maybe not really working, but at least not totally shut down.

I have decided that the light (much like the cake) is a lie!

The happy little light has told me nothing about the actual problem. However I have pretty well concluded that the power switch, although it does nothing, is not the problem. I tested at the MB contacts and it still didn’t power on. That made me think my motherboard was the element responsible for said brink situation. If that is/were the case it may well find itself doing nothing more than becoming part of a wall…

However there was a strange development. The thing suddenly turned on!

Not when I hit the power switch… just because it felt like it.

Luckily when this happened I was sitting next to it. I am lucky, because it started making a rather unpleasant high pitched noise, not loud, but annoying. It also made a very slight burning smell. Apparently the thing has decided that it hates my apartment and will sacrifice itself to burn the place down and save me from evil. Good luck on that one bud…

Luckily this little revelation does seem to indicate the power supply as the bricked component. That would be much cheaper to fix and might actually result in me fixing it rather than scrapping it for parts!
