New Police Technology

Just when you though you had mastered the art of impaired driving, the cops have a new piece of technology to use against you. We’ll see if it works or if it is another gadget gone to far.

The HawkEye™ System

Hawkeye eye tracking system - from Gizmodo

This handy little device actually tracks the micro-movements of your eye as well as pupil size. It uses this to determine if you are impaired and should work for any substance. It will probably also be great at telling cops that your medical eye disorder is, in fact, really PCP.

I’m all for being safe on the road. One of the things I loved in Japan was that the subway generally kept me safe from drunk drivers. But, in my opinion, this goes too far in some ways. It seems much like the polygraph.

The polygraph device can accurately detect lies. Or it can at least detect if you are nervous, or have an autonomic response to interrogation. This new device sounds like the same sort of thing. I am very sure it can tell an officer amazing things based on eye movements, but there needs to be extensive testing on what sorts of things create false positive readings.

wow this looks like a really cool device. I disagree with the fact is has gone to far though. It seems like a lot quicker way to find out if your drunk than making you do a bunch of test.

I think it could be useful. But I that what they are trying to measure can be effected by by far too many other variables.
