The last few days I’ve been getting some internal server errors while trying to remotely post using either Windows Live Writer (a very awesome new program I am toying with) or BlogDesk.

Right now it mostly just seems to be a problem with posts that contain images. From the mu.wordpress site it appears that others are also having the same problems with posts that contain images.

I have a couple of posts still on schedule, but it is annoying to not be able to queue up some of the other things I have ready and waiting in the wings.

UPDATE

I managed to get an email back form tech support at my host in less than an hour (go team!). It seems the problem is with most host servers defaulting to PHP 4 rather than PHP 5. The fix is also incredibly easy, if you have a .htaccess file you need to add two lines:

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

And bam, problem fixed!

As evidence the post directly after this was posted using live writer.

On another note… The line of code the tech support agent gave me caused huge problems… It looks like they omitted the space between php5 and .php – so addtional credit goes to The Code Cave. I was able to check the code I was given against theirs and figure out the problem.

Well, the site theme has changed again. This time the theme is very much a rip of the DeviantArt website that was excellently created by Deniart.

I loved my old theme, but the code inside of it was generally a mess and made things load rather slowly. The code for this theme is much more ordered and goes about things in generally logical ways. This theme also has only one sidebar, and gives the content more space. One thing I will be attempting (keeping my fingers crossed) is to implement the excerpts of slightly older posts that were present in the old theme. I liked it, and it really shouldn’t be hard to bring to this theme.

This theme doesn’t do much to feature my art as a banner, but as much as I enjoyed the vanity of it, I am a slave to faster loading pages than seeing my own stuff at the top of a page… especially when people who visit here come to see the content below the header.

If you like or hate the theme, leave a comment.

I’m back from the Cape. Ok, so I have been for a couple of days now, but I’m lazy. If I manage to remember to get the pictures off my camera I will post pictures sometime tomorrow or the next day.

On another note, the meta data (login and what not) for the site moved down a couple of notches. The main reason is very simple… You can no longer register at this site. Since you never had to register to leave a comment, and only I write here, there is no reason to have open registration. It helps me close some possible security holes and keeps my inbox free of registration spam.

Also the new Entrebar is made of awesome. I’ve been an entrecard member since close to the launch of the service, but I was mostly inactive for quite awhile. Mostly because it was a pain to do any card drops while at work or just popping online at home for a few minutes. The new Firefox bar does an amazing job of simplifying the process and making it fun again!

Enough random, back out the door I go.

Recently there have been a number of new user registrations. However, the vast majority are from addresses that are almost certainly bot generated. This being the case, it has been time to clean out the user list.

Any user that shows as having zero comments will be deleted by the end of the week.

So if you happen to be a real person, have registered as a user, and have not commented please either leave a message here or on any other post. Luckily, due to the magic of WP, you don’t have to register to comment. And most of you who do comment are, in fact, not registered. So I predict business will continue exactly as normal!

A few changes will be made to the existing entires on the blog that regard my teaching experience. I got a request from my training coordinator (after another teacher showed him my blog) to remove staff and student names. Any privacy issues hadn’t even crossed my mind while writing the entires, and I certainly understand the concern.

So if you suddenly check on the entries and wonder why things look just a bit different, that would be why.

On a related note, go teach in Japan! Or anywhere abroad. I think living and working in another country is a truly life changing experience that will force you to confront many of those “taken for granted” assumptions we have.

I know the experience was positive for me. Not to say it wasn’t hard. It was one of the most challenging experiences in my life. But that is what made the experience worthwhile. It was not easy, and the beginning of it was not fun. But almost every experience that nearly destroyed me is now one I treasure. The old saying No pain, No gain is true. Learning can be hard, becoming more flexible or stronger can hurt, and learning to read and speak all over and trying to work while being abroad for the first time in your life is a trial in endurance. But if you’re up for the challenge you will never regret taking it!

Well I recently started taking in ads from a new company called Project Wonderful. I have only been on the system for about 2 days but I already have a strong opinion about it.

I love Project Wonderful!

But before I tell you why, let me tell you why you should believe what I have to say. I am not getting paid in any way to write this. I wish I was, but Project Wonderful does not yet offer any referral system. So don’t think I’ve been conned into a positive opinion.

Now the features and why I like them.

The ads themselves come in a variety of flavors. You can have small buttons, boxes (125 x 125 as I use in my sidebar), headers, skyscrapers, banners. Pretty much anything you could want for size and variety. then you get to customize them. For my ad type you can select the number of rows and columns for ad space. Mine is obviously 4×1. I haven’t tried any other types yet, so I can’t comment on customization available. But the ability to tailor it to your site is great and a bid selling point for me.

Next is how you get ads. People bid on the spaces you have. My site started at the high price of being free. They do this so you don’t have lame empty boxes just sitting there making your site look unpopular. When bids come in (depending on your options) you can individually approve every ad. Once you approve an ad the bidding war begins for spaces. All bid prices are the cost per day for the ad. This is the only ad service I have ever been part of that I actually have fun checking my account at.

Sure it might be fun to check to see if you’ve made money other places. But Project Wonderful gives me the chance to see how bids are going, check my own sales and bid stats, and just generally have as much fun monitoring my ads as I have creating content for my site.

Way to go PW! You have a new and very loyal customer!

I have always hated nofollow as a blogger. When you regularly visit, comment, and contribute to communities it is nice to get a little link juice back. Especially when you are commenting on blogs you don’t write about except for comments. I don’t want to take up any space on their blogroll since my website isn’t related to theirs. The same goes for people who comment on my blogs.

there are many plug-ins that accomplish the same thing, and many that have more control options. the Semiologic version just a quick simple fix though. So, stop by and comment, you’ll get all the link love you need!

And just to start sharing regular link love – I found the plug-in over at Toast & Egg & Me

For the past couple of years I have been batting around an idea that my friend Clint gave me. When you want to do any research project, one of the big first steps is doing your review of the literature. No sense designing something from the ground up only to find out that someone has already “been there, done that.”

Depending on how you view it, you get lucky and there has been nothing done. You get to be the proud pioneer of an original idea that no one has yet succeeded in proving. However, just because you cannot find any published research is starting to mean much less. Most journals agree that publishing “successful” research gets the best return audience. By successful they mean proving the hypothesis correct.

This mean that a ton of equally valid research that failed to prove the experimental hypothesis stays in the dark. The much larger issue is the fact that this research has done a very important thing. It proved the null. Or that you are just as likely to get the same results by chance and there is not significant trend.

Therefore I will be slowly forming a new project called Null By Design.

After a site is actually created I will be attempting to find research from all those universities that was archived. Because no one should have to not prove the same hypothesis from scratch every time. The academic world has fallen back to a trend of not learning from its mistakes as publishers have exerted more control over time.

To those magazines and journals that give all the good press to proven experimental hypotheses I say — “Keep up the good work!” That research needs to get out to people. But give me all the leftovers, and let me make sure that new research students and professionals can work on avoiding pitfalls and fill your pages with better results!

So if you have research that “failed” or are linked to an institution goto my contact page and get in touch. We need to talk!
